Welcome to my first blog post about the notion of the "Digital Nomad." I am pretty sure that you have heard the term before, especially if you were born before 2008. Lol; :-) It came about when folks were seriously debating the concept of the ideal Work/life versus Life/work balance. Nobody seemed to be able to quite figure out just the right combination. People were leaving their offices behind and working out of their homes to spend an extra hour with their kids. Or, they might have to hurry home for half an hour to meet their dog walker at mid-day. Whatever the case may be, working folks were determined to change how people thought about work in light of the new technologies that had developed to empower them.
Then came the TikTok generation, also known as the Millenials, I suppose. The next thing you knew young people were setting up tripods in their parents' living rooms with the hopes of starting a social media empire. Or, perhaps, they were outfitting a custom van and photographing the start of each new day in an epic location to share with their growing fan base. I saw quite a few versions of the "Digital Nomad" lifestyle, and each version struck a different chord in a curious way. Now, three days after the New Moon in Virgo has occurred, I am forming my own angle on the concept. The sun sign Virgo is ruled by Mercury which is the planet of communication. It also ties in closely to technology, so for me, the idea of the "Digital Nomad" has come of age. And the idea is as simple as this: You can work wherever you want to work. It's literally that simple.
Working wherever you want to work can still be a revolutionary idea, because there are certain unavoidable tasks which need to be done in specific areas. However, as a creative freelancer, changing up your work location can have dramatic impacts on your product and your process. Take photography as an example. The place, or the object, you photograph can completely change the subject of your concept.
I will be writing more on this idea of the Digital Nomad as the future unfolds. Just going to a new location, other than your home or the office, with your writing tools and setting yourself up in the new space might prove more or less challenging depending on the strength of the internet signal where you are located.
